On a pitch with much in it for the bowlers, Merrow U15s lost to their Godalming counterparts by 20 runs in a low scoring affair.
After Godalming were bowled out for 47 runs, the Merrow team must have felt confident in reaching the low target. However, what followed was a good lesson for the boys of Merrow, should they wish to take it.
Showing a distinct lack of application most of the batsmen perished to shots that were inappropriate given the conditions. Whereas "grim determination and concentration" were required, what we saw was gung ho in the extreme.
The Godalming bowlers applied themselves very well, but the Merrow batsmen gave them every assistance.
Comments heard from the patio from some of the embarrassed batsmen seemed to suggest they did not realise just how bad they had played. I do hope that the long discussion held by the team management afterwards put all of the team in no doubt as to the errors of their ways.
Best wishes to the team selected for the next match.
